The first time I went to the market to buy flowers I decided to focus on one of my favourite works of art by Hilma af Klint to help me stay focussed and choose a harmonious colour palette of blooms. It became a habit and now, every time I’m making flowers, I use the colours in a painting I like for inspiration.
Whilst I do admire people who live with a neutral colour scheme or only dress in black, I can’t imagine it for myself. I adore colour and like to surround myself with it as much as possible. Blod bunches are always colourful and full of different textures.
Here are some of my past inspirations –
The Cedric -
Inspired by this beautiful self-portrait Cedric Morris painted in 1930. During a talk at the Garden Museum, I found out that Cedric Morris was born in Swansea, my own hometown.

The Madge -
Inspired by the automatic drawings of Madge Gill whose work I discovered on a walk along the Thames out in East London.

The Mother Goddess -
Inspiration taken from the colours in a fantastic textile installation by artist Jonathan Baldock which I saw in the London Mithraeum Space and was dedicated to the artist’smum.

The Green Man -
Inspired by the green man, old papa toothwort, the botanical folklore in Georg Kitty’s huge paintings and the Welsh coastal path in late summer.

The Cockle Picker -
Inspired by a painting of a Swansea cockle picking woman by Ernst Neushcul on display at the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery in my hometown.

The Glenys -
Inspired by the incredible Welsh artist Glenys Cour in honour of her 100th birthday.

The Vanessa -
Inspired by this painting I saw at Sotheby’s. It’s a portrait of Vanessa Bell at Charleston by Duncan Grant.
